5 Things You Can Do in 5 Minutes to Make Graduation Photos So Much Easier

Picture this: In just a few weeks, you’ll be walking across the stage you’ve worked so hard to reach. After all the late nights, hard work, and everything it took to get here, graduation is finally within reach. It’s a moment worth celebrating, and one you’ll want to remember long after the cap and gown are put away.

But the reality is, graduation comes with a lot to think about—finishing school, moving out, figuring out what’s next—and planning your photos can start to feel like just another thing on the list.

Take it from me, a photographer who had to take her own graduation photos—not because I’m just that great (okay, I am), but because it was one of those things that just got lost in the mountain of to-dos before walking across the stage.

Even though I was lucky enough to live near a beautiful park, have access to a good camera and professional lighting equipment, and walk away with a few photos I loved, the whole experience still felt rushed. I didn’t get to capture all my favorite departments-the places where I spent countless late nights, or even include the friends I’d made along the way. Looking back, I wish I had more photos to commemorate my four years in Savannah. If graduation is coming up, I want to help you avoid that same feeling.

Here are five simple things you can do in under five minutes to make planning your graduation photos easier—and make sure you capture the moments you’ll want to remember.

1. Create a five-photo inspiration board
Gather five photos you love and bring them to our consultation call! I’ll help you identify what you’re drawn to in each one, whether it’s the poses, lighting, locations, or overall feel, so we can use those ideas to plan a session that feels like you.

2. List three places that defined your college years
Think about the places you frequented most, from your favorite campus building to the spot where you spent countless late nights. Including meaningful locations adds a personal touch to your graduation photos and helps tell the story of your college experience.

3. Text two friends about joining you
Sometimes, all we need is a little help from our friends to get the ball rolling! Invite a couple of friends to join you for a few photos. It’s a fun way to celebrate the people who made your college years special and capture memories together before everyone goes their separate ways.

4. Check the sunset time
A quick sunset search can help you figure out the best time to schedule your session. Natural light changes throughout the day, so knowing when the sun sets gives us a starting point for planning your photos around the light we want.

5. Pick one meaningful prop
Think about bringing something that represents your college experience, whether it's your diploma, a favorite book, flowers, or something related to your degree. These little details can make your photos more personal and help you remember what made this chapter of your life uniquely yours.

Bonus tip: Try on your graduation outfit
Don't wait until the day of your session to try everything on! Take a few minutes to check how your outfit looks with your cap and gown, make sure everything fits comfortably, and see if any adjustments are needed. A little preparation now means one less thing to worry about later.
